It is almost impossible to put into words the scope of wildlife in the Pawleys Island area and how many opportunities there are to see creatures in their natural habitat. Enormous efforts have been made to preserve habitats and create gardens in order to appreciate nature in all her glory.
One of the best ways to get into nature is to take a boat tour along historic plantations of South Carolina's beautiful Lowcountry rivers. You will see up close, alligators, eagles, osprey and all manner of wildlife.
Tours are available from Brookgreen Gardens or Plantation River Tours

Or you can take a tour around Hobcaw Barony a 17,500 acre wildlife refuge set up for the "purposes of teaching and/or research in forestry, marine biology, and the care and propagation of wildlife, flora and fauna in connection with colleges and/or universities in the state of South Carolina. One special tour for birding enthusiasts visits scenic salt marshes, red-cockaded woodpecker colonies, cypress swamps and loblolly lowlands and ancient sand dunes dominated by turkey oaks.

A National Historic Landmark, Huntington Beach State Park's freshwater lagoon, saltmarsh, maritime forest and beach are outstanding examples of the State’s natural coastal environment. These also provide such prime habitat for birds that the park is widely recognized as one of the best birding sites along the East Coast.

Brookgreen Gardens, covering 9000 acres, was founded in 1931, to preserve the native flora and fauna and display objects of art within that natural setting.
Today, Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and has the only zoo accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association on the coast of the Carolinas.
The thousands of acres in Brookgreen's Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve are rich with evidence of the native plants and animals of the South Carolina Lowcountry as well as the great rice plantations of the 1800s. Explore these places through the programs at the Lowcountry Center by walking the Lowcountry Trail and by taking an excursion by boat or overland vehicle deep into the Preserve.

Also the golf courses are home to many species of birds and animals, one has every type of Woodpecker in residence. We have seen a bald eagle, hawks, blue birds, blue jays, red cardinals, every type of water bird, a mother raccoon teaching her tiny offspring to climb and of course many alligators.
