Fort Sumter National Monument
On April 12, 1861, Confederate artillery opened fire on the Federal held Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor and the Civil War began.

Falling to Confederate fire power 34 hours later Union forces then tried for the next four years to take it back.

The crumbling ramparts are testimony to the pounding it took from Confederate guns.

Daily boat tours to Fort Sumter can be found at Patriot's Point and provide a good insight into the geography of Charleston Harbour as well as its military history.
